Learning the Meaning of Unknown Words
نویسنده
چکیده
Lexical acquisition is one of the most difficult problems in building up operational natural language processing systems. Automatic learning of new words (morphological, syntactic and semantic properties) is even harder. The paper discusses our solution for overcoming the lexical gaps. Learning what some unknown words might mean is abductively driven by the world knowledge and the local context of the unknowns, according to the pragmatic principle stating that abductive inference is inference to the best explanation. A generalization of the weight assignment for weighted abduction inference strategy is proposed in order to overcome some inherent difficulties existing in a standard cost-based abductive processing.

Iranian EFL Learners’ Lexical Inferencing Strategies at Both Text and Sentence levels
Lexical inferencing is one of the most important strategies in vocabulary learning and it plays an important role in dealing with unknown words in a text. In this regard, the aim of this study was to determine the lexical inferencing strategies used by Iranian EFL learners when they encounter unknown words at both text and sentence levels. To this end, forty lower intermediate students were div...
متن کاملL2 Learners’ Lexical Inferencing: Perceptual Learning Style Preferences, Strategy Use, Density of Text, and Parts of Speech as Possible Predictors
This study was intended first to categorize the L2 learners in terms of their learning style preferences and second to investigate if their learning preferences are related to lexical inferencing. Moreover, strategies used for lexical inferencing and text related issues of text density and parts of speech were studied to determine their moderating effects and the best predictors of lexical infe...
متن کاملThe Comparative Impact of Pictorial Annotations and Morphological Instruction on Lexical Inferencing of Iranian Intermediate EFL Learners
One of the main ways to acquire unfamiliar words is to make guesses about words meaning. This study investigates the comparative effects of pictorial annotations and morphological instructions on Iranian EFL learners’ lexical inferencing ability. Considering homogeneity issues using PET (Preliminary English Test), the researchers assigned the participants into two experimental and one control g...
متن کاملWord learning: An ERP investigation of word experience effects on recognition and word processing.
Adults of varying reading comprehension skill learned a set of previously unknown rare English words (e.g., gloaming) in three different learning conditions in which the type of word knowledge was manipulated. The words were presented in one of three conditions: (1) orthography-to-meaning (no phonology); (2) orthography-to-phonology (no meaning); and (3) phonology-to-meaning (no orthography). F...

We develop techniques for learning the meanings of unknown words in context. Working within a com-positional semantics framework, we write down equations in which a sentence's meaning is some combination function of the meaning of its words. When one of the words is unknown, we ask for a paraphrase of the sentence. We then compute the meaning of the unknown word by inverting parts of the semant...
